Our Homes

OwnLife is committed to providing young people with a caring and positive environment in which they can achieve independence and fulfil their potential and personal goals. We believe in promoting the strengths of every young person regardless of their past experiences or behaviours and that every child is unique and needs to be looked after by adults who will share and promote their individual aspirations.

Referral and placement matching

Upon referral a plan is drawn up and the expectations of the young person and the social worker are defined and agreed. The child/young person is invited to visit the proposed placement, hear their feedback, and meet some of the care staff.

Care staff visit the young person at their current placement. The aims and aspirations of the young person are always considered to enable OwnLife to provide a positive experience.

Care planning

Young people are encouraged to personalise their living space, this is a small first step towards starting their independence. Every young person is allocated their own keyworker who will be available to support the child/young person and provide consistency throughout their placement. Support the child/young person in practising their religion and faith, source places of worship if they wish to attend.

Every month reports are written and sent to a child’s/young person’s social worker so they can monitor progress; the child/young person can read and comment on report before it is sent. Education and training are sought and tailored for each child/young person. Activities, hobbies, and interests are encouraged, and children/young people are supported to pursue these.

Allowances and budgeting are key to developing independence, each child/young person has support with their allowances and how to budget.

Planning for independent living

Stepping forward to my independence is a programme developed to be used with the young person and keyworker as a starting point to support development of skills needed to enable a young person to live independently in the community.  By the time our young people reach 18, it is the company’s aim to ensure they have been taught the skills needed to enable them to make decisions and live a happy and successful life post care.

When a young person is ready to move on, a planned transition with all relevant parties involved will begin working with the young person at every step of the journey, this ensures a smooth transition into the next chapter of the young person’s life.
